Help choosing the right bit and bridle

3 weeks ago I took on a 16.2 thoroughbred gelding hoping I could use him as a jumper. He’s a great horse and a very fast learner, but Im having some problems that I need some help with. the lady I got him from told me to keep him in a twisted snaffle and a standing martingale, well the first time I rode him in that he looked like a giraffe, his head was straight in  the air and he was very unbalanced. So after that I switched him to a German Martingale and he’s doing better but I’m still having some issues…

for one I dont like the twisted snaffle on him he really fights it and wont stop chewing on it, some people have suggested putting him in a full cheek but are there other bits that would also work? I dont really think he needs anything more harsh in his mouth but I would like everyones opinion.

and second he likes to open his mouth a lot and i want to get a new bridle to help him to keep it closed I’ve had people suggest both a figure 8 bridle, and just a flash band but I would like some opinions on what would be better!

everyones comment are welcome! please if you had a horse that was similar tell me what worked for you! thanks!

Question for Kristin!

Hi Kristin! so I have a 2 year old reining/ cutting bred AQHA gelding
I really want to start his training out right so I’ve decided to not start riding him until he is at least 3, and take my time on ground work instead.

my question is what are some things I can do now to get started on training a young reining prospect, without actually riding him?

What is a good age for a horse to start ground work with a surcingle?

I have a 2 year old quarter horse who I do not want to start ridding until he is at least 3, however I have had a few people tell me to start round penning him using a surcingle that way he can start building his top line and he is still getting a work out.

my question is this, is it okay to start working a 2 year old on a surcingle? I want to make sure he wont have growth problems or problems later in life so I want to make sure it is a good idea before I try it.

What is a good grain and supplement for a young horse?

I have a 2 year old quarter horse gelding who needs grain and supplements

he has small feet and his hooves aren’t the best so my farrier suggested putting him on a supplement to help his with his feet

he’s also a pretty small horse hes about 14 hands

so what I’m looking for is a good grain supplement combo that will start to build him up in weight, height, and hoof health

he is on an alfalfa mix hay right now

also he is not getting ridden I’ve made the choice to not start riding him until he is at least 3 just to make sure he wont have growth problem, He does still get worked I do round pen work with him 2 to 3 times a week.

This is my new horse Hot Wheelin Dancin (aka Rango) he is a 2 year old registered AQHA gelding he is bred for reining and cutting and he has a few good barrel horses in his lines as well. My plan is to show him in reining and cutting.
I’ve been working on teaching him basic roll backs and I’ve been teaching him how to respond to my seat and my leg along with my my voice. he is doing amazing I will be posting more pics and videos soon. feel free to jude his confirmation and tell me what you think

schooling Barrels back in February

This is me and my horse Odie school Barrels a months ago. and for the record he is not having a freak out his is taking off for home in this picture he has a lot of power and sometimes throws his head up at times during out run. but honestly this horse gets great times already so I figured its best to let him run the way he wants.
any way Odie is a really amazing horse hes truly and all around boy I do everything on him western and english pleasure, working ranch horse (cutting, reining, and roping), Barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping,  hunter/jumper/eq, dressage , a little bit of eventing, and on top of it he is also my rodeo queen horse which means he does parades and rodeo grand entries (running around an arena full speed while waving) and flag runs (running around an arena full speed on horse back carrying a flag) hes really a special horse :)
so feel free to judge and leave comments
