Please help! Stephanie and Hosanna

Hi there, this is me on Hosanna. I’ve had a really big problem with staying too upright when I jump, and I’m really worried that it will somehow affect us badly if it gets any worse. I’ll think that I improved alot after a lesson, but when I look back on the photos I see that I look exactly the same. This mare is a fantastic jumper when she has a confident rider, but I’m scared that somehow my position will make her nervous into the jumps. What can I do to change it? Any advice would be really, really appreciated. Thank you in advance!

That’s the first thing I noticed….was how upright you are with your body. When Hosanna jumps, think about laying the flat of your forearms right down on top of her mane. It’s perfectly OK for your elbows to be on top of her neck over the fences. Look where your elbows are in both photos. Take a look at some of the other photos throughout JMR….see where the better riders place their arms Don’t think about your body position…..think about your arms position, and THAT will fix your body angle.

Thank you very much! I’m riding today and will try that!

Someone once gave me really good advice about not jumping ahead and “folding” properly over jumps. They told me to think about passing the cheese. Let me explain. When you jump, don’t thrust your body forward, but rather just let your arms reach forward like you’re passing a plate of cheese. ;) Doing squats while reaching your arms forward is a good way to practice. Also, while you’re still consciously thinking about your position, think about closing your hip angle and keeping it over the center of your saddle (right now you’re far out over the pommel). When you jump think about squatting down and passing the cheese, not standing up.

Sorry if I just blabbed on…hopefully some of this helps you!

Wow that took a few reads to understand, but that’s a visual that actually makes sense! Thank you so much I’ll give it a try! ***Off to go live out the rest of my weekend in squat formation……..***
