Judge My Ride Please!

Hi, I’m just a girl who loves to ride horses but doesn’t exactly have the funds for it.  It gets really depressing at times seeing people who get to ride all year so I try to improve my riding as much as I can.  So please just give me any pointers on these pictures from the last time I rode a horse.  His name is Cowboy, and my instructor was having me work on really quick transitions because he has a very hard mouth and doesn’t respond much to the bit.  So mostly we were working on transitions like from canter to halt, so they were big transitions and not just from one gait to the next in the cycle, it’s skipping a lot of gaits.  It was difficult, but very fun and rewarding.

I know it’s a limited amount of photos, but most of my pictures are more than 2MB so this was the best I could do.

Two is a great amount. Can you please edit them so that we can enlarge them?

It’s edited now, please give me any tips :) Feel free to critique me, I can take whatever you can throw ;)

For not riding often you look pretty darn good :) Raise your hands a bit and remember that your elbows should brush your shirt, so bring them back a bit. That second photo, I’m guessing that you were doing a downward transition? You have braced your foot in front a bit, probably to help you sit and give you a little more leverage. Relax your body, yeah it seems strange, but when you relax your body then you sink into the saddle and your horses relaxes and its easier for him to understand you want him to slow. In both, you are sitting back a bit too far, on the back of your seat bones… now I don’t mind since I event, but for hunter/eq/pleasure type stuff you really want to be sitting on the front of your seat bones. I don’t think that saddle was helping your position any either…

Thank you :) I will take your advice and try to better my riding, and yes, I only ride during the summer for 2 months, 45 minutes a day and 5 days a week, plus it’s in a ring with about 6 other people (yes, it’s very cramped). I’ve been doing this routine for about 5 years now, so in all, I’ve ridden about 10 months. It’s very limited and I wish I could afford to ride more. I wish I had the funds to ride more, but, for now, I’ll take all I can get. Thank you for your advice :) If anyone else has advice, please, feel free to give it to me!
